Silent Sifter v1.3 – Analyzing…Analyzing…Analyzing…

  • by

Silent Sifter 1.3 is now available in the app store!

We have received a few questions about the new version, so here is more information that should clarify things.

What features are in v1.3?

  1. Customized Folder Structure
  2. Customized File Renaming
  3. Duplicate Prevention regardless of filename / file location (folder)

In order for us to enable these features, we now need to load the metadata about each input media file, and any media file in the output location.

Loading the metadata takes time.  So when you run a sift for the first time, if you have a lot of files, you might see an ‘Analyzing’ screen come up and hang around for a long time.  If you have a LOT of files, it may be Analyzing a long time.

This is normal, and the good news is that metadata is only loaded once per file.  So the second and every additional time you sift it will be much, much faster.  This is because all of that metadata is saved for the Sifter to use later, even if you restart the Sifter.

Think of the first time you added all of your photos to iPhoto, or when you first added all of your music to iTunes – it took awhile that first time, but from then on, it was pretty quick.  Same story here.

My library is 70,000 files, and I keep a backup library also, so the Sifter had to analyze 140,000 photos/videos, and it took quite awhile.

One note, in order for the metadata to get cached for future Sift operations, you need to close the program the standard way – any metadata loaded will be lost if you ‘force quit’ so we recommend avoiding that.  If you decide to cancel the analysis phase, and then close the program with the standard close button, any metadata loaded will be saved and future Sift operations will start where you left off.
